The economic gooch
If you’re around my age, cherish the memory of the economic gooch, that glorious gap between the 2008 crash and Covid. We were absurdly lucky to glide through early adulthood before the chaos that followed. The crash was above our heads, we missed the pain, caught the rebound, and floated through a decade that felt like progress while the next crisis quietly brewed.
In hindsight, it was ridic. Cheap(ish) rent, £280 flights to Japan, the buzz of globalisation, cultural crossovers, everyone just getting on with it. We were too busy living, gigs, travel, late nights, to see the scaffolding rusting beneath it all. It was a rare, fleeting calm, a window where the world still felt abundant, before reality tightened its grip.
We’re lucky to have had that feeling.
